The Indian Music Academy is a new institute by Sharmila Mathur in Edmonton, Canada that offers Sitar, Tabla, Voice and Harmonium, and a course for musicians. We offer courses around Edmonton.
Sitar
• Sit and hold the Sitar with the correct posture
• Play alankaars (progressions) specific to the correct movement of the right and left hand
• Play a composition and taans in a raga with various ornamentations
• Learn the concept of taals and play the above composition with a taal played on tabla
• Tune Sitar with a Guitar tuner available in music stores or on smartphones (free application)
• Understand tonal qualities and structure of the instrument
• Learn basic concepts, notation system, and historical background of Indian Music
Tabla
• Sit and play different bols (syllables) on Tabla with the correct posture and hand movements
• Tune Tabla with a Guitar tuner available in music stores or on smartphones (free application)
• Understand tonal qualities and structure of the instrument
• Play a taal, toda, and tihai on Tabla
• Learn basic concepts, notation system, and historical background of Indian Music
Voice and Harmonium/Keyboard Course
• Sing the basic scale of Indian Music and alankaars (progressions)
• Learn the technique of voice modulation to improve the tonal quality and expand your vocal range
• Sing a composition (chant or bhajan) composed in a raga with alaap and taans
• Play the same composition on harmonium or keyboard
• Learn the concept of taals and play the above composition with a taal played on tabla
• Learn basic concepts, notation system, and historical background of Indian Music
Course for Musicians
• Play a composition and taans in a raga with various ornamentations on your own String, Key, or Wind instrument
• Learn the concept of taals and play the above composition with a taal played on tabla
• Learn basic concepts, notation system, and historical background of Indian Music
• Learn and develop the art of improvisation following the rules and the mood of the raga
